International Folk Art Market
This July the International Folk Art Market will
be held at Santa Fe's Museum Hill once again. This festival is an annual event
and has featured artists from over 87 countries. It is run by a nonprofit
organization – the International Folk Art Alliance, which sponsors artists and
gives them the ability to travel to New Mexico to participate in the festival.
It not only showcases art, but performing arts and food as well. It is an event
held to empower culture around the world, and it has something to offer to everyone
who attends.
The market does not only empower
culture, but it empowers the communities that the artists come from. Because
the event is funded primarily by donations, the artists can keep up to 90
percent of the sales money, which goes to their respective communities. According
to the IFAA, the market sold $2.9 million in goods in 2015. It has
the ability to give many small communities an extra bit of support. There are
also several free events surrounding the market, so it is one of the seasons
when there is a lot to do in Santa Fe. If you’re looking for ideas for a
weekend getaway this summer, consider visiting Santa Fe during July 8-10 and
soaking in the culture at the International Folk Art Market!

I love to hear about communities supporting the arts! The fact that the festival gives artists the opportunity to give back to their communities in return is amazing. I wish more places had this kind of postive cycle going in their communities.
